BJJ Belts

Belts for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is what shows where a practitioner is on their ranking system.  The ranking system is a means of showing one’s practical skill and technical knowledge within Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Belts of color are worn by the practitioner as an award to use as a part of the uniform. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu shares very similar ranking system’s structure origins with the Judo ranking system and colored belts of martial arts. Now the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ranking system has grown to incorporate unique themes and aspects.

BJJ belts in Jiu Jitsu are known to be one of the harder belts to obtain compared to other martial arts like Hapkido, judo, and karate. It takes typically about 10 years or so for someone in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to obtain a  black belt making one of the hardest martial arts to move up in ranking. In other martial arts to gain a black belt some only require anywhere from 7 months to 4 years. So it is important in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that one values and honors their BJJ belt and the process of moving up in ranking.

In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu there are two systems that they go by when it comes to the BJJ belts and how the advance their students. Some promote students one belt at a time and the second option is to award students with stripes along the way from one belt to another to keep track of one's progress and keep each individual motivated.  The other system is more traditional where you don’t use any type of progress tracking and just promote from one belt to another. This has been known to leave the student working harder to a new belt and an open curiosity.

The white belt is the first belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. There is no prerequisite and is the rank held by any practitioner new to the intricate art. Most children are promoted through belts in the order of; white, grey/white, grey that’s solid, black/grey. yellow/white, solid yellow and so forth. Each belt has 5 levels to it. There is first a clear belt then 4 stripes that can be awarded for behavior, time, knowledge and performance at the tournament.
